School stories - grants

All aboard for a day at the seaside

Wood Grange Infant School

Woodgrange Infant School is based in Forest Gate. The school is a huge advocate of outdoor enrichment and learning for all children. It is a school in an urban area, with high numbers of children from low-income families. As a result, the majority of their children and families have never visited a beach.

In year 2, the children read a book called The Secret of Black Rock. It is a story set near a fishing town with a girl who explores how our environment is in danger as a result of sea pollution. Inspired by the book, and keen to expand the children’s horizons, the school wanted to take their children to Leigh on Sea. This means taking the C2C train service which costs £11 return, and which is not affordable for children who receive free school meals.

Thanks to the Get Out! Grant from EVOLVE Advice, the school was able to make this visit affordable for all their children.
