UK-France school group border pilot to speed up border crossing

From 3 April, school groups travelling from the UK to France via the Port of Dover could see their travel time reduced and paperwork simplified, thanks to a new pilot scheme launched today.

The scheme has been developed through collaboration between the UK and French Governments, ferry operators and bodies representing schools and providers, including the School Travel Forum.

Under the pilot, school groups that submit their passenger information to their chosen ferry operator at least 72 hours before travel could benefit from a faster processing time at the French border in Dover.

Significantly, children who are ‘visa nationals’ i.e non-UK nationals residing in the UK on a visa (who would usually require a visa to enter the EU) will be eligible for visa-free travel when taking part in a school trip to France.

Jake Wiid, Director at EVOLVE Advice says:

“This is a positive step towards reducing the bureaucracy around overseas travel for school groups. Uncertainty around the rules for group passports and border requirements has led to long delays for schools, which has a knock-on effect on travel plans, supervision and staffing.

“Current rules also make it harder for children and young people who are not UK nationals to participate in these important cultural experiences so visa-free travel is a particularly welcome move.

We will continue to monitor the situation and update our schools community with further developments.”

Jack Steer, Director of Port Operations for P&O Ferries, says:

“We’re delighted to be the first ferry company to simplify travel for school groups heading to France from Dover. Our team has worked tirelessly to implement this system ahead of the busy Easter season.”

As this is still a pilot scheme, you should contact your chosen provider, or ferry operator (if self-booking) to check that your carrier is participating in the scheme. EVOLVE Advice clients can email advice@evolveadvice.co.uk for support with planing your overseas educational visits.
